Prompt Coverage

What is Prompt Coverage?

Prompt coverage is the percentage of relevant buyer prompts where your brand appears in AI responses. If buyers ask 100 different questions about your category and your brand shows up in 35 of them, your prompt coverage is 35%.

Breadth vs. depth

AI visibility metrics measure two distinct things. Mention rate measures depth: how consistently you appear for a specific prompt. Prompt coverage measures breadth: how many different prompts trigger mentions of your brand.

Both matter, but they tell different stories:

ScenarioMention ratePrompt coverageDiagnosis
High/High60%+50%+Category leader
High/Low60%+<20%Niche specialist
Low/High<20%40%+Known but not recommended
Low/Low<20%<20%Invisible to AI

Most brands start in the bottom-right quadrant, low on both. The first goal is expanding coverage so AI models recognize your brand across the buying journey. Then deepen mention rate on priority prompt clusters.

How to measure coverage

Prompt coverage requires structured testing, not spot checks:

  1. Build your prompt library: collect 50-200 prompts across buyer journey stages: awareness, consideration, evaluation, and decision
  2. Include prompt variations: the same intent phrased differently ("best CRM," "top CRM tools," "CRM recommendations for SaaS")
  3. Test across models: run every prompt on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity
  4. Score binary presence: for each prompt-model combination, does your brand appear? Yes or no.
  5. Calculate coverage: total prompts with at least one mention / total prompts tested

Prompt Metrics automates this entire process and updates your coverage score weekly, so you can track whether your content optimization efforts are expanding your footprint.

Closing coverage gaps

Every gap in prompt coverage is a missed opportunity, a buyer question where AI sends people to competitors instead of you:

  • Prioritize by intent: focus on prompts with commercial intent first ("best X for Y") over informational queries
  • For each gap prompt, examine what the AI recommends instead and what sources it cites
  • Write authoritative content that directly answers the gap prompt with specific data and expert attribution
  • Get your brand mentioned on the specific domains AI trusts for those topics
  • Add structured data schema markup so AI can extract and attribute your claims

Track coverage weekly. As your content propagates through training data updates and RAG retrieval, you should see coverage percentages climb on the prompts you targeted.

Frequently Asked Questions

AI mention rate measures how often you're mentioned when a specific prompt is asked repeatedly. Prompt coverage measures across how many different prompts you appear at all. High mention rate on a narrow set of prompts means AI knows you well for specific questions. High prompt coverage means AI knows you broadly across the whole category.

Category leaders typically achieve 40-60% prompt coverage across core buyer prompts. Niche players may see 15-25% but dominate specific prompt clusters. Below 10% means you're largely invisible to AI-driven buyer research.

Map the prompts buyers use in your category (category exploration, comparisons, use-case queries, feature evaluations) and test each one across models. Prompt Metrics automates this across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity, showing exactly which prompts mention your brand and which don't.

Significantly. You might cover 50% of prompts on Gemini but only 20% on Claude. Each model has different training data and different synthesis patterns. Model-level prompt coverage breakdown reveals where to focus your efforts.
